Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure a junior college students¢¥ knowledge about AIDS and to examine junior college students¢¥ attitude toward AIDS patient. The data were collected from 551 nursing students and 382 non-nursing students, using a questionnare was made up to section; to measure knowledge about AIDS, knowledge evaluation tool developed by Jeon was used and to examine attitudes toward the AIDS patients Kelly¢¥s prejudicial ebvaluation scale and social interaction scale was, used. The data was analyzed using percentages, Means, T-test, Pearson¢¥s correlation Coefficient.
The results of this study were as follows :
1. Among the 20 items about knowledge evaluation, nursing students¢¥ the average score for correct items was 11.6, and non-nursing students¢¥ average score was 9.8.
And there was statistically significant difference between nursing students and non-nursing; students (t=9. 70, p=. 000).
2. Among the prejudicial evaluation items, the hightest mean ratings on bias toward AIDS patient were ¢¥responsible for his illness¢¥ (nursing students M=4.28, non-nursing students M=4.20).
In contrast, the lowest mean ratings were ¢¥deserves medical care¢¥ (nursing students M=1.90, non-nursing students M=1.86).
These results showed that college students had a negative attitude toward AIDS patients, especially as they were related to interpersonal relationship with AIDS patient, and no statistically significant difference between nursing students and non-nursing students.
3. Among the social interaction items, the hightest mean rating on the agreement of interaction was ¢¥willing to continue friendship¢¥ (nursing students M=3.26, non-nursing students M=3.39), the lowest mean rating was ¢¥allow children to visit¢¥ (nursing students M=1. 40, non-nursing students M=1.39).
And there was no statistically significant difference between nursing students and non-nursing students.
4. The correlation between the level of knowledge and social interaction among nursing students were statistically significant negative (r -. 1022, p =. 022).
5. Religion and the level of social interaction among non-nursing students were statistically significant difference,(t=1.96, p=.050).
